Objective 7: Absolute entropy and the efficiency limit
Before you begin
Your goal: Identify the ideal system for which entropy approaches zero at absolute zero, then construct the maximum heat-engine efficiency from energy and entropy balances.
Build the Third Law statement first, then derive ε = 1 − T′/T for a reversible engine. The derivation uses the First and Second Laws; the Third Law supplies the separate low-temperature context.
- Read each question and write your answer and reasoning on paper or in your own notes.
- Keep your original answer intact. Do not erase or overwrite it.
- Switch on “Reveal answer,” then separately record what you got right, what you got wrong, and what you left out.
- Rewrite your answer underneath the original, staying as faithful as possible to your own wording while making the necessary corrections and additions.
- Finish your reflection and rewrite, then select “Next question.” Earlier questions collapse and can be reopened. The “Compare, then revise” reminder is available inside each answer. The Key connections sidebar grows as you reveal answers.
This page does not collect your answers or save your progress. Write everything separately.

About this estimate
Plan for 75–105 minutes. This includes working through all 16 questions, writing your answers separately, comparing and revising them, and completing the independent Third Law and Carnot-efficiency reconstruction. The estimate assumes brief responses without outside research. This is a planning estimate; your pace may vary.
Your answers stay in your own notes. This page does not collect responses or save progress. Reloading starts the lesson again.
